  This species is found from southeast Florida and Bermuda to the West Indies and further south to Brazil. The average shell length of this species is about 12.5 cm. The shell gets its name from the prominent extension of the outer lip of the shell which resembles a roosters tail.
  The inside of the shell aperture is generally creamy white changing to light orange or red as it moves outward. the outer shell coloring ranges from light tan to a deep reddish brick color.
